History "Scrapbook Day" - Sat. May 9th

Hosted by El Cerrito Community Council

Blessed Sacrament Church Parish Hall

Download the flier about this event.

(This flier requires at least Adobe 6.0 PDF reader.  If you have an older version, you may experience difficulty.  Please download the latest version of the free Adobe reader.)

Plans are moving forward and participants and volunteers are needed for this great community event. Join with local historians and your neighbors in sharing your stories and photographs of El Cerrito and the College Neighborhoods.

Please bring your vintage family photos and stories of the “College Area neighborhoods” to share. Scanners and video/audio recorders will be available for documenting your contributions to our community’s history. You and your neighbors’ memories are an essential part of preserving and celebrating the unique heritage of this community.

Start combing through old photographs, shaking loose memories, and help identify long-time neighbors who would be important subjects for interviewing. This is an excellent opportunity for residents to compile histories of our neighborhood for future generations to enjoy.

Recognize that it is stories and photographs that hold the “personal” history of the community. Remembrances of local houses, schools, churches, businesses, youth sports, clubs, issues, families, individuals and events are of interest. The day-to-day history of life in the College Neighborhoods is just as important and relevant as what was documented in the big newspapers. So please help us uncover and share our collective histories for current and future residents to enjoy.

We are looking to collect your memories through:

  1. Oral History Interviews:
Historians/Interviewers will be on hand to record your stories and recollections.

  1. Scanning Photographs:
Bring your own photographs (loose, framed, in albums) of the neighborhood and surrounding area to share. Scanning and cataloging stations will be set up to capture those images you are willing to share.

  1. Memorabilia:
Objects other than photographs or items that can be scanned are also of interest. Street or business signs, maps, restaurant menus, advertisements, business letterheads & cards, contracts & deeds, event flyers, architectural plans, school yearbooks and other such items/objects may also be of interest.

Fun Facts

Just remember that photos and memorabilia don’t have to be really, really old. Items from just a few years ago or ten or twenty years ago that document individuals and events are just as valid as historical sources. Also, photos and stories of houses, buildings, families and everyday life don’t have to be “professional quality.” Sometimes that simple family snapshot has far more historical value than the professionals’ portrait of a building or business.

The College Neighborhoods Foundation History Project, led by local historian Jim Newland, has arranged for long-term archiving of all images and objects at San Diego State University. All images and materials will also be available to benefit the programs of the local community councils and the College Neighborhoods Foundation (CNF).

It is hoped that this will become a recurring event for CNF to replicate throughout the College Neighborhoods.

If someone needs a ride to get to the Parish Hall to participate, transportation will be available. Just let Jan Riley know at 619-287-2460 or ECCC@cox.net and arrangements will be made to pick them up and take them safely home.
